Popular Singer Ed Sheeran is to perform a free concert in Coventry for 700 fans, to mark the “grand opening” of HMV Empire in Hertford Street.

The concert scheduled for 25 August is also part of celebrations for the company’s centenary with tickets to be issued in a free draw.

The venue has moved from Far Gosford Street and undergone a £500,000 redevelopment.

The singer-songwriter said: “HMV is a store that I spent a lot of time in growing up and a place where I discovered lots of new music, so I’m looking forward to celebrating this milestone with them.”

Phil Rooney and Dave Brayley, the site’s co-owners, said: “To have Ed Sheeran – one of the world’s biggest artists – not only coming to Coventry but performing in our new venue, the HMV Empire, is simply mind-blowing.”

The firm added those attending the gig would have their temperatures checked, as part of continuing measures to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

The pop star’s performance coincides with Coventry’s year-long programme of arts events as the City of Culture.

Ed Sheeran whose full name is Edward Christopher Sheeran MBE is an English singer, songwriter, record producer, musician, actor, and businessman. Sheeran has sold more than 150 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Taylor Swift’s re-recorded version of her Fearless album won’t be in line for Grammys next year. This is following the singer’s decision to not submit it awards consideration.

Republic Records, her current record label, said Fearless was already “the most awarded country album of all time and that her decision not to submit it came “after careful consideration”.

The original version was named album of the year in 2010 but won’t be able to repeat that feat at the 2022 event. This is because Swift plans to re-record and re-release her first six albums in order to have complete control over her music.

It follows the 2019 acquisition of her master recordings by music mogul Scooter Braun and his subsequent selling of them to an investment fund.

The award winning musician who is opposed to Braun or any other party profiting from her recordings used her publishing rights to block some attempts to exploit them.

The 31-year-old hopes fans will listen to and buy the new versions of her albums on streaming services and download stores, rather than the originals.

Released in 2008, Fearless went on to be named both album of the year and best country album at the Grammys.

Swift won two additional awards at the 2010 ceremony – one of which she dropped while posing for photos afterwards.

The singer won four Grammys at the 2010 ceremony
Swift won album of the year again in 2016 with her 1989 record before winning the prize once more this year with Folklore.

She is the first female artist to win album of the year three times, a feat three men – Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder – have achieved.

It is up to individual artists and their record labels to submit their records for Grammy consideration, a process that can sometimes lead to some surprising omissions. Other artists who have taken such decisions are Cardi B, Frank Ocean and The Weekend.
