The United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) has provided classrooms and toilet facilities to about 20,000 children across six local government areas in Borno state.
The local government areas are Gwoza, Hawul, Mobbar, Monguno, Jere and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
The project which is funded by the European Union and Implemented by UNICEF through state and local partnerswill provide immediate relief to children in some of the most hard-to-reach areas in the state.
In a statement, UNICEF says it has handed over 116 newly constructed and renovated classrooms as well as 53 latrines to the Borno State Universal Basic Education Board.
According to the statement, the facilities will support girls’ education, reduce classroom congestion, and improve access and retention of conflict-affected children in school.
It adds that since 2009, over 1,400 schools have been destroyed and 2,295 teachers killed across the North-East in protracted conflict.
Attacks by armed groups on education and school facilities, the influx of internally displaced families into metropolitan cities and population growth have also stretched existing school structures to the limit, creating challenges of access, retention, and school completion.
The Head of Health, Nutrition, Resilience and Human Development at the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms Montse Pantaleoni, lauded the initiative and said the EU and its member states are committed to supporting the government of Nigeria in the area of education, including the strengthening of Education Management Information System for longer term benefits in the sector.
“Education is a fundamental human right and investing in people is the most important investment any government could make for its citizens. Getting a number of out-of-school children back to school, and especially keeping the girls longer in school will contribute to better parenthood and reduce the effects of poverty that fuels protracted insurgency,’’ said Montse Pantaleoni.
The projects are components of a three-year €10 million European Union Support to Early Recovery and Resilience package to UNICEF to support children, youths, and communities in Borno State.
Niger gov’t pledges priority on education, teachers’ welfare
Niger state government has pledged to accord priority to the welfare of teachers in the state to enhance their performance.
State Governor Alh Abubakar Sani Bello stated this on the occasion of twenty twenty one teachers day award ceremony held in Minna Niger state.
Represented by the Deputy Governor Ahmed Mohd Ketso the Governor maintained that education which guarantees economic growths and development can only thrive and be positively impacted under conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
He however described the desire to identify and award deserving teachers at this time by the Niger state Universal Basic Education Board as apt and timely and called for more to succeed.
Commissioner of Education Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu charged beneficiaries of the gesture to make judicious use of the items for their comfort.
Executive Chairman SUBEB DR Isa Adamu said two teachers three head teachers three education secretaries and one principal of junior secondary were awarded among their colleagues.
Dr Isa Adamu however added that they were chosen for the award not because they are the overall best but because they have satisfied the procedure of selection process.
ASUP suspends 65-day long strike
Lecturers under the auspices of Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics (ASUP) have suspended their 65-day old strike.
National Publicity Secretary of ASUP, Abdullahi Yalwa, who announced this, said the union suspended the strike following an appraisal of the report indicating the gradual implementation of the items contained in the Memorandum of Action signed between the Union and the Federal Government.
Lecturers had on April 6 embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands which border on the failure of the government to address the sorry state of polytechnics and monotechnic and the expiration of the ultimatum issued since March 2020.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Yalwa explained that the union is not in anyway calling off the strike but suspending it for a period of three months to enable the government execute the items contained in the Memorandum of Action signed with the Union on 27th April, 2021.
The Union directed all its members to resume on Thursday, saying it looked into the appeals made by the government, revered traditional stools in the country, members of the National Assembly, Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics and indeed members of the public who showed varied interests in the matter.
Yalwa said, ”As part of the efforts communicated by the Federal Ministry of Education, certain items have been fulfilled like the reconstitution and inauguration of governing councils and visitation panels in Nigerian Federal Polytechnics while we are led to believe that the release of funds for infrastructure revitalization and minimum wage arrears is currently being processed.
”Other items include the ongoing efforts at the review of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service for Polytechnics as well as the commencement of work towards resolution of the issues around CONTISS 15 migration arrears for the lower cadre.
”We also acknowledge the recent passage of the Bill for removal of the dichotomy against HND holders in the country.
”In reaching the decision to suspend the strike, our Union took into cognizance the appeals made by the government, revered traditional stools in the country, members of the National Assembly, Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics and indeed members of the public who showed varied interests in the matter.”
The union expressed optimism that the suspension of its action will provide an enabling environment for the government to fulfill other aspects of the Memorandum of Action and afford the government an opportunity to reverse its trust deficit within our sector.
UTME: 160, 617 candidates write 2021 mock exams – JAMB
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has disclosed that 160, 617 candidates wrote the 2021 mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, across the country.
JAMB disclosed that the candidates took the examination on Thursday in 777 centres across the country.
The Board’s Head of Media and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the essence of the mock exam was to test the capacity and suitability of the centres.
Addressing journalists at the end of the exercise in Abuja, Benjamin said the exercise conducted nationwide was hitch-free, except at the Dominion International School, Jabi, Abuja where there was a fire incident and candidates were redirected to other centres.
He said: “We have over 160,617 candidates sitting for this mock examination in all our CBT centres. We received a report of complaint of capacity and stability of one or two centres.
“Like in Abuja, there is a centre- Dominion International School, Jabi that caught fire during the examinations but everything has been put under control.”
Benjamin assured that JAMB is adequately prepared for the main UTME, which occurs between June 19 and July 3, 2021.
“The exams are going on well and with what we have now, it shows we are good to go for the main examinations coming up June 19,” he said.
The examination, which is aimed at preparing candidates for the actual UTME due to take place between June 19 and July 3, 2021, was administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in all centres nationwide.

Earlier, a JAMB Technical Officer, who monitored the exercise at the Global Distance Learning Institute in Central Area, Abuja, Mrs Oluwaseun Omotosho, said 200 candidates registered for the exercise but only 125 sat for the exam.
Omotosho noted that the centre which has four examination halls, recorded no incidents as everything went smoothly.
One of the candidates, who spoke to journalists, Adelina Etete, said the mock has motivated her to study more and adequately prepare for the main UTME.
Ikpeazu Warns Beneficiaries To Stick To Guidelines
Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has warned the management of private schools that were handed back to their owners to operate according to the terms and guidelines for the handover.
LEADERSHIP reports that the schools had been taken over by the then East Central State government under the administration of the late Ukpabi Asika at the end of the Nigeria Civil War in 1970.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu gave the order at an interactive session with newsmen at Governor’s Lodge, Aba, saying the state government will not hesitate to withdraw the certificate of recognition of an offending school.
“Nothing in the statue books says I shouldn’t withdraw their ownership and revert it to government if any of you is found to be violating guidelines,” said the academician turned politician.
He expressed concern that owners of the schools which included individuals and faith- based organisations were allegedly violating the terms and guidelines for the handover.
He said some of the proprietors had violated the terms and guidelines by either selling some portion of the property or converted it to other purposes other than for teaching and learning.
Acknowledging that the handover was conducted in 2013 by the immediate past administration, he added that since government is a continuum his administration would continue with the agreement.
